Baseball season is officially in full swing, and Angel Stadium’s Wi-Fi 6 network upgrade is sure to hit a home run.

As baseball fans arrive back in the stands for the 2021 season, new systems of operation have been put in place at ballparks across America to ensure a safe and healthy return of crowds. However, social distancing and face masks won’t be the only major league changes in place at Angel Stadium this year; the venue took its off-season preparations one step further by fully upgrading to the most cutting-edge Wi-Fi 6 technology available in the marketplace.

“We are thrilled to again partner with Connectivity Wireless to build a next-generation game day environment, said Al Castro, Senior Director of IT for Angels Baseball. “Our goal, as with each of our technology advancements, is to work toward an ideal ballpark experience for everyone who enters through our gates. Faster, more seamless connectivity is only the beginning.”

Leveraging a CommScope RUCKUS network, the venue will boast unprecedented network speeds and unmatched capacity to ensure the best game-day experience for visitors, robust application support for stadium staff, and peak operational capability for all users.

The COVID-19 Impact

Castro shares how present circumstances necessitated network upgrades at Angel Stadium that will have a lasting impact:

“In a strange way, safety-driven protocols actually served as a catalyst toward creating a more digitally driven environment that, in the long run, will enable even better fan experiences,” said Castro. “The same wireless networks that are necessary to support initiatives like digital ticketing and cashless transactions can be leveraged to alleviate common pain points such as overcrowding and long lines – I don’t see the industry ever going back.”

Wireless Technology Leaders

This is not the first time Angel Stadium and Connectivity have pioneered new technology in the sports world. In 2019, the venue successfully hosted CBRS trials that leveraged the newly released 3.5GHz band to feed video surveillance, two-way radios, hand-held devices, and cellular devices.

We are eager to again work with the Angel Stadium in building a first-of-its-kind high-performing network, which will set the tone for Wi-Fi performance for years to come. This system will enable us to deploy advanced analytics and IoT services to better support fans and operations as we go back to normal life,” said Alessandro Feitosa, Senior Vice President of Wi-Fi at Connectivity Wireless.

Unlocking the Benefits of Wi-Fi 6 Technology

The existing network is currently undergoing upgrades to Wi-Fi 6 for the 2021 season, focusing on key areas and venue operations. Full venue coverage is projected by March of 2022.

“Superior connectivity is a major contributor to the fan experience.  CommScope’s RUCKUS Wi-Fi 6 will facilitate the data needs and demands of more than 45,000 fans who attend the Los Angeles Angels games,” said Bart Giordano, Senior Vice President of RUCKUS Global Sales, CommScope.  “The 400 Wi-Fi 6 access points will enable Angel Stadium to better understand, serve and engage fans as they monetize and secure their networks.”
